Choosing the Right Material for Your 3D Print: PLA, PETG, and Resin Compared
Picking a print material is really picking a set of trade-offs — strength, detail, ease of printing, and how the finished piece will actually be used all pull in different directions. Here’s how the three most common options stack up.
PLA
The default starting material for most FDM printers, and for good reason — it’s easy to print, doesn’t warp much, and comes in a huge range of colors and finishes.
- Best for: display pieces, prototypes, anything that won’t see heat or heavy stress.
- Watch out for: it gets brittle over time and softens at relatively low temperatures — not the right choice for anything left in a hot car or used as a load-bearing functional part.
PETG
A step up in toughness and heat resistance from PLA, at the cost of being slightly trickier to dial in (it strings more easily and needs a bit more tuning).
- Best for: functional parts, brackets, anything that needs to survive real-world handling or mild heat exposure.
- Watch out for: the extra stringing tendency means retraction settings matter more than they do with PLA.
Resin
Not an FDM material at all — a photopolymer liquid, cured layer by layer with light — but worth comparing directly since it’s often the real alternative for detail-critical work.
- Best for: miniatures, jewelry masters, anything where fine surface detail matters more than raw toughness.
- Watch out for: more brittle than either filament option, and the post-processing (washing, UV curing) is a real extra step, not optional.
Quick Decision Guide
Need it to look good on a shelf and nothing more — PLA. Need it to actually function, get handled, or take a bit of stress — PETG. Need maximum surface detail and don’t mind the extra post-processing — resin. Most of the mistakes we see come from picking a material based on price alone rather than matching it to what the piece actually has to do once it’s off the printer.
